A Must See: The Does-Nothing-O-Matic

This is one of those systems that is setup where one object starts the “ball” rolling, then hits something which hits something else, and so on all the way to the end of the “ride”. This one is quite long and ingenious!

    I think that’s called a ‘Rube Goldberg’:

This one’s definitely pretty cool. The cameraman must’ve had his hands full putting out fires and turning off water spigots, though. And if that dart was really a bullseye (and not pre-placed), I’m truly impressed.

Yep, you are correct. I had never heard of that term before you used it. I’m interested how did you come to know of it?

Rube Golberg machines are pretty common. I am surprised that people are unaware of their proper name.

This thing contains so many cool stuff, I don’t know which is the best. The cell phones and pocketing the red ball with a hammer are my favorites.

FYI: Wikipedia: “A Rube Goldberg machine is an extremely complex apparatus that performs a very simple, very easy task in an indirect and convoluted way. The most horrible examples of his machines have an anticipation factor, as the machine makes slow but steady progress toward its goal.”

This is obviously staged. There are many points in which it’s definitely a new take. For instance when he is approaching the stairs, you see no cameraman there, but the scene changes very quickly to have someone on the stairs, in a position that we would certainly have seen him before from on top of the stairs. I can’t be too impressed by this if it was pieced together in the way that it was.

This is obviously a product of the cutting room. It’s still a nice effort though.

Does anyone know how the chess board part was done? Was it magnets underneath?

impressive, but would be so much more impressive if it was one long take, it looked like it took a couple of days to complete, filming i mean, not setting up

In the US, and probably other places as well. Many of us grew up with a game called “Mousetrap” The entire game was an example of a rube goldberg device. I think that’s how many are familiar with the concept, if not the name.

This is impressive. Those who are complaining that it wasn’t done in one take. Who cares! I’m sure that, due to the level of sophistication of setup, it was due more to the fact that the camera person couldn’t move as quickly as the flow of the machine, and they may only have had one camera. If they had more than one, you would have called it “fake” too.

The point is that this is pretty genius stuff, and you dedicate your life to responding negatively to things like this.

Don is entirely correct. Rube Goldberg devices, and the name, are very common. I think it as odd that you are unfamiliar with the name as you seem to be that others are.
